Chiefs sign third-rounder, make more moves

The Chiefs handled a bunch of paperwork Thursday, as teams approach the end of offseason programs.

The team announced a handful of transactions, including the signing of third-round pick Derrick Nnadi.

Six NBA teams are clients, along with five NFL teams and five MLB teams. Teams in the MLS and NHL and several major college programs also use AIQ. In six years, the database has grown to the point that test scores offer a statistical correlation with on-field performance — whether it’s rushing yards, interceptions, batting average, slugging percentage, scoring average or steals in basketball.

We’re comparing apples to apples not apples to oranges, Bowman said. If you score well on our tests, it’s something that’s notable and something that’s special.

The son of ex-Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowler Erik Williams has been arrested for a double murder in a drug deal gone bad in Texas.

According to FanRag Sports, Murray and the Athletics have a $5 million deal in place which will allow him to play football for Oklahoma in 2018. The slot for the No. 9 pick in the MLB draft is $4.76 million, so the A’s will have to move some money around with their other picks.

The deal allows him to play for just one year, though. Murray has two years left of college football eligibility.

Kyler Murray and the A’s have a deal that guarantees him close to $5M and allows him to play football (he’s a QB and could be Baker Mayfield’s replacement) at Oklahoma for 1 year.

Oakland took Murray with ninth-overall pick Monday knowing full well he is slotted to be OU’s starting quarterback in the fall, taking over for 2017 Heisman Trophy winner — and No. 1 NFL draft pick — Baker Mayfield.

Report: Patriots shopped Gronk to teams they trust

No, the Patriots didn’t have a deal in place for tight end Rob Gronkowski that was kiboshed by owner Robert Kraft after quarterback Tom Brady threatened to retire. Yes, they were calling teams about a potential trade as recently as three days before the draft.

So who were they calling? Albert Breer of SI.com recently said on FS1 that the Patriots talked not to the entire league, but to some teams they trust.

In fact, he’s now using that case as a recruitment tool — as in, sign with him and it won’t happen to you.

[CAA] should be going through [clients’] social media, line-by-line, the minute they become a client, he said. This is no different than representing a politician. You have to know everything that could potentially come out.

Darnold will get a chance to compete for the job.

We’ll see what happens at the end of training camp, Bowles said, via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

Vacchiano quotes a team source saying Darnold as a real chance to open the season under center. Darnold has taken first-team reps, impressing the Jets with how he’s handled everything so far.

We threw the whole playbook at him, Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said. Just like the same with Josh and Teddy. If you treat them like a rookie, they will become a rookie. We threw the whole book at him to see what he can handle, what he needs to work on.

Wilkins noted that the squad does have a local hair-salon sponsor, but the women are required to tip for whatever the service would’ve cost: For me, it was probably close to $150 a month. She also paid $10 to $15 out of pocket for spray tans once or twice a month, year-round.

The ladies also have to wash their own uniforms, unlike the players.

Dion Lewis says he and Derrick Henry can be NFL’s best RB duo

The Tennessee Titans’ top two running backs couldn’t look more different to observers. Derrick Henry stands tall at 6-foot-3, weighing an imposing 245 pounds. Newcomer Dion Lewis stands 5-foot-7, but after a few minutes of watching the 190-pound back run through arm tackles, it’s clear he’s not all that little. There isn’t a more diverse NFL backfield, and the Titans hope what makes them unique will also make them great together

I thought it was a good play by Sevy, he said. It was definitely him being aggressive. I think when the ball first went up, Gary didn’t see it. So the sun being what it was, the way I saw it was Gary looked at it and then kind of looked to his right for maybe help from third base or something like he couldn’t find it. And I think Sevy saw that maybe (Sanchez) didn’t see it. So he said, ‘Maybe I’m going to catch that and went up and got the rebound.

Severino cracked up telling his side of the story on a day he pitched eight shutout innings to improve to 10-2.

He didn’t say, ‘I got it’ until I was there, so I went for it, Severino said. At the beginning, he didn’t see (the ball). I went there and when I jumped, I heard, ‘I got it.’ But I already was in the air.

When Severino came down with the ball, Sanchez told him, ‘You took it from my glove.

Later, Sanchez said, I was very surprised he jumped and caught it. I think it’s just his instinct to make a play there.

Surprisingly, Yankees manager Aaron Boone approved of Severino rushing in to steal the ball from Sanchez.

The most peculiar play of the game came in the fifth when Rays right fielder Carlos Gomez hit a high popup just in front of the plate and Severino raced in and jumped over Sanchez to make the catch.

Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ DH on Saturday, was 2 for 4 with two doubles. He’s hitting.444 (8 for 18) over his last five games.

Cardinals sign a running back

The Cardinals had a roster spot open up this week when undrafted rookie fullback Austin Ramesh decided to walk away from football after several concussions during his college career at Wisconsin.

The team has dragged this thing out, but it’s clear Luck isn’t healthy enough to play. The Colts will look to Brissett to carry the team for the rest of the season.

After luck was placed on IR earlier in the week, it was reported that he was advised to not throw for months in order to focus on his rehab.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there’s also a chance he could have another surgery:

First, most recommendations have Luck taking a few months off from throwing likely two to three months to focus solely on rehab. At this point, no one has recommended another surgery, though it remains a possibility.

I’m going to ask all of those people to recommend to me — because that’s what they’re protesting — people that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system. And I understand that. I’m going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated and I’m gonna take a look at those applications and if I find and my committee finds that they’ve been unfairly treated than we’ll pardon them. Or at least let them out.

I think it’s going to be interesting, Packers special teams coordinator Ron Zook said, via Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I think there’s a lot of people wondering about how it’s going to be. Thankfully, we have at least what we think it’s going to be now, the rules and so forth, (so) we’re able to work on it. You’re probably going to see, in my opinion — it’s just my opinion — but more returns.

As Tom Brady returns to practice, Patriots QB falls short of Bill Belichick’s standards

Deep into the first mandatory minicamp practice of the year for the New England Patriots, everything came to a sudden halt. For good reason.

Bill Belichick was screaming, his fury directed at the offense guided by Tom Brady. Judging by the choice words, it was apparent that what Belichick saw was too sloppy for comfort. He ordered the entire unit to sprint a lap down the field and back, with Brady at the front of the pack, while the defense rested.

Maybe this is just the challenge that Brady, 40, needs. Like, go ahead, try a new offseason regimen and see if you can still win it all. However given the established standards here, everything might not be kosher unless Brady and Belichick can lead the Patriots to another title. You know, Super Bowl or bust.

What he’s done since February, you have to be a superstar to do that, Baffert said. He’s like Pharoah. They’re superstars.

Two batters after Judge put the Yankees in the lead, Giancarlo Stanton had teammates dumbfounded watching him homer to left on an 0-1 changeup from righty Joe Biagini that looked like it was shot out of a cannon.

I think that’s maybe the hardest ball I’ve ever seen hit, manager Aaron Boone said.

By Statcast calculations, this 416-foot blast had a 119.3 mph exit velocity that made it the hardest-hit homer of the season and second hardest ball hit this year behind only a 119.9 mph single to right center that Judge hit off Los Angeles Angels righty Garrett Richards on May 27 at Yankee Stadium.

How Sanchez still impacts Yankees as a.200 hitter

Since Statcast started keeping exit velocities in 2015, Stanton’s homer was tied for the 12th hardest hit on a list in which he and Judge have 11 of the top 13.

Stanton didn’t do a post-game interview with reporters. Maybe he wasn’t impressed.

Donald Trump livid when Tom Brady skipped White House visit, report says

President Donald Trump recently banned the Philadelphia Eagles from the White House. He appeared close to doing the same to the New England Patriots in 2017.

Trump reportedly felt snubbed when he learned Tom Brady would not be with the team during their visit to the White House after Super Bowl LI.

But before OT can put a jersey into production, the finalized design has to be approved by Minor League Baseball. The guy in charge of that is Andy Shultz, MiLB’s assistant director of baseball business operations, who’s on pace to review and, he hopes, approve more than 700 specialty jersey designs from MiLB’s 160 teams this season.

Police had found two large clear glass jars containing 99.9 grams of marijuana in Ward’s apartment while responding to an intrusion alarm. Possession of marijuana over 20 grams is considered a felony in Florida. The paraphernalia charge was a misdemeanor.

Ward’s girlfriend, Ciera Woody, originally told police that it was medicinal marijuana.

Ward, a three-time Pro Bowler, is currently a free agent. He was released by the Denver Broncos in September 2017 and signed with the Bucs on a one-year deal worth $5 million.

Fortunately, I don’t screw it up (that’s Smorol on the right side of the frame, with Jack standing next to him):

Oh, and then they decide to have a baseball game. The Chiefs Devices go on to lose, 5-3, to the Toledo Mud Hens (the perfect minor league team name, because it sounds like they’re always doing a wacky theme night), but nobody seems to mind too much. The between-innings activities are a hoot, especially the bit where fans have to smash water balloons with Brannock Devices. Smorol and his staff seem happy, Follett and the Brannock people seem happy, and everything feels like a win, even though the team lost. That’s the minor leagues.

The next morning, I’m at the Syracuse airport so I can fly home. Inside my bag is a souvenir Brannock Device that I received during the game. As my bag goes through the security scanner, the TSA screener squints at her monitor and says, Is that a foot-measurer you have in there?

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski won’t be hanging around for more OTAs

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski were there last week for the mandatory minicamp.

But neither of them are going to volunteer to hang around.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Patriots stars won’t be attending this week’s voluntary OTA sessions, including a team field trip.

That means their next appearance will be when players report for training camp on July 26, with practices to begin the next day.

We started going back and forth on it. There were two major numbers that I couldn’t believe. One was about 80 million people stopped watching sports on the weekend when football goes off the air. That’s one. The second one though that was even more intriguing to me was a minimum of 20 million people stop playing all forms of fantasy sports the day football goes off the air.

The Rockies have allowed a major league record three or more home runs in five consecutive home games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Colorado also has given up 10 or more hits in 11 consecutive games since May 28. That’s the longest in the majors since Seattle’s 11-game streak in August of 2008 and the longest in the National League since the Dodgers had a 12-game streak from Aug. 23-Sept. 5, 2006.

Diamondbacks: OF Steven Souza Jr. (right pectoral strain) took live at-bats against injured starters Robbie Ray (strained right oblique) and Jorge De La Rosa (right Achilles bursitis) on Saturday. Ray threw two innings and De La Rosa one. Both will take Sunday off. … A.J. Pollock (fractured thumb) will have a CT scan next week. … RHP Shelby Miller (Tommy John surgery) will throw 85-90 pitches for Double-A Jackson on Sunday.

There’s zero doubt in his mind: Concussions are to blame.

Lewis offers two more startling takes before leaving. Heck yeah, his boys will play football. Eight-year-old Jazz already has, and Dad half-jokes that he needs to get tagged.

Moments earlier, sipping buttermilk coffee inside his downtown Atlanta office, Lewis pointed to the north, said those kids had options, and then pointed to the south. Those kids did not. Those kids don’t give a s–tabout concussions. Holding out a fist, Lewis then dramatically, sternly listed the reasons one finger at a time.

Hell, where I grew up, you take a lot of risk. You risk your kid going out hanging with the wrong crowd, selling drugs. You risk your kid hanging out with the wrong crowd, getting killed. You risk your kid hanging out with the wrong crowd, joining a gang. So, which one are you going to take? I’ll take football any day out of all of that.

It’s not you you’re worried about, he says. It’s your kids you’re worried about. It’s your family you’re worried about. You not being able to talk. You not being able to move around. … You don’t know when it’s going to hit you. You can manage but there’s only so long you can manage. At the same time, what are you going to do?

He takes a deep breath. A rusting car zips by and honks its horn, and Lewis waves back.

He can sense the sadness creeping in again and stops it.

I can’t live in the fear of ‘Oh, one day…one day….’ You can’t do that, because that day might never come. You might be one of the lucky ones. There might be something that comes out to help cognitive issues. You can’t live in fear.

Steelers tease everyone with announcement of new throwback uniform for 2018

Team president Art Rooney II has basically been spending the entire offseason letting everyone know that the Steelers would be getting new throwbacks this year, and now, we finally know when the team will unveil them.  The Steelers announced on Thursday that the new uniform will be dropping on May 30. If you want to set your Google calendar, the official announcement will be coming at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Penny is a dark-horse Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate and a potential silver-lining provider for a team that could have its hands full in 2018.

This is a copycat league. So when the Eagles rode a deep defensive line rotation to Super Bowl LII, teams took notice. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were clearly one of those teams, because they went out and loaded up on talented D-linemen.

They went straight to the example-setter on two occasions, signing former Eagles Beau Allen and Vinny Curry just days apart in March. They also traded for veteran Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and used a first-round pick on mountainous former Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea (6’4″, 347 lbs).

But for only the second time in franchise history, the Jets just used a top-three draft pick on a signal-caller. The first occurrence was in 1965, when they took Joe Namath first overall. This time, it was polished USC product Sam Darnold in the No. 3 spot.

He might have to fight to replace Josh McCown and even Teddy Bridgewater on the depth chart, but ESPN’s Dianna Russini noted earlier this month that head coach Todd Bowles would be willing to hand the 20-year-old the starting job if he outperforms those guys in training camp.

Even if the Jets stink, it’ll be worth participating in Darnold Watch 2018.

Jon Gruden is new (hasn’t coached in a decade) and old (coached the Oakland Raiders for four years at the turn of the century). So while Gruden has attracted a lot of criticism in his first offseason back in Oakland, his return will undoubtedly be one of the most buzz-worthy stories.

Cleveland Browns to be featured on ‘Hard Knocks’

Cleveland Browns fans know the hard knock life. So it’s only fitting that, on the heels of a historic 1-31 stretch, their team will be featured on Hard Knocks.

HBO and NFL Films announced Thursday that the Browns will be the 10th franchise to be depicted on the training-camp series. The series will premiere Aug. 7 on HBO.

In the modern, app-driven age, you won’t have to worry about sounding like a fuddy-duddy who wandered into a naughty novelty shop when placing your first bets. But you will want to be a little savvy with the lingo when talking about your bets if you hope to hang with or even impress other gamblers. Master these phrases and you will sound like you grew up hanging around weird old men at dog tracks:

“I put a quarter on the Bills and two bucks on the Dolphins.” Referring to large sums of money as small change makes you sound cool. So in this example, you bet $25 on the Bills and $200 on the Dolphins—and are probably about to lose $225. Also important to note: Dimes are a drug reference; try to keep your legalization movements straight.

“I teased the lines on the Bills and Dolphins.” The sports book allows you to fiddle with point spreads in exchange for lumping two bets together. So here, you exchanged lower odds of winning any one bet for the feeling that you were doing something clever. Yep, the term teased is being used exactly backwards.

Mechanical problems with the plane and storms in the Washington, D.C., area were to blame, general manager Brian Cashman told Newsday’s Erik Boland.

After a 12-hour delay that players spent either on the plane or in the terminal, the team was able to leave at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the report said.

The Yankees and Nationals game at Nationals Park on Tuesday was postponed after 5 1/2 innings with the score tied, 3-3, due to rain. It was supposed to start at that juncture Wednesday, to be followed by Wednesday’s originally scheduled game, but rain ruined those plans, too.

The Yankees are scheduled to travel back to Washington, D.C., to complete the games June 18. They also have to head to Detroit for a makeup doubleheader that was the result of rainouts.
